Biological Approach to Behavior | IB Psychology | Nervous System

The nervous system is a communication network in our body, made up of neurons.

Neurons have three main parts: the body, dendrites (tree-like), and axon.

  • Neurons receive signals/messages through its dendrites
  • The axon sends signals further to other neurons
  • When a neuron receives enough signals, it generates an electrical impulse known as an action potential
  • This impulse travels along the axon until it reaches the synaptic terminals, at the end of the axon, where it triggers the release of neurotransmitters
  • A neurotransmitter is released into the synaptic gap
  • The released neurotransmitter is thus available in the synaptic gap for a short period during which it may be destroyed (metabolized), or pulled back into the pre-synaptic axon terminal through reuptake
